Infection control awards announced

The winners of the 2007/2008 Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year Awards - designed to recognise those who are improving standards of infection control within hospitals worldwide - have been announced.

The winners were:

1st Prize: Worcester Acute NHS Trust.

2nd Prize: East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust.

3rd Prize: Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is the fifth year of the Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year Awards and the task of deciding the winner gets no easier said Fiona Macrae, Oxoid Awards manager and chairman of judges. "The standard of entries was extremely high with many examples of excellent practices and falling rates of infection. The results given by many entrants prove that their work is contributing to better patient and public outcomes, which is encouraging news for us all. The winning teams should be justly proud of their achievements."

The first prize of £5,000 went to the team at the Worcester Acute NHS Trust. The judges were impressed that, faced with many challenges, including the major disruption of Department of Health Intervention, the team were able to reduce rates of MRSA and C. difficile infections, reduce antibiotic usage and introduce a number of novel methods for reinforcing the message of infection prevention and control around the Trust.

The Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year Awards are supported by the Hospital Infection Society, the Infection Control Nurses Association and the International Federation of Infection Control. The judging panel is made up of representatives from each of these associations together with other experts in infection control, and the panel is chaired by Fiona Macrae, the Oxoid Awards Manager.
